Gender selective abortions, already a problem in India and China, are on the rise in the United States. On May 15th, Oklahoma became the third state to ban such abortions.

“Though critics have questioned whether sex-selective abortion is a relevant issue in America, a report by researchers at Columbia University and the National Bureau of Economic Research published in 2008 revealed a strong “son bias” in American births in 2000, and showed “clear evidence of sex selection, most likely at the prenatal stage.”

It’s about time!! Illinois’ ban was passed in 1975 and Pennsylvania’s in 1989.

Sweden, on the other hand, rules that it’s not illegal to abort a fetus based on its gender.

“According to Swedish law, abortion is legal on any basis whatsoever up to the 18th week of gestation, and therefore the board said doctors cannot deny a mother seeking to have an unborn child killed because it is the wrong gender.”

“A medical ethics consultant told The Local in March that mothers regularly travel to Sweden from Norway, where sex-selective abortions are illegal, to abort unwanted girls.”
